A Grand 'Open Mic' Night Out at Cawthorne Club

Updated: Aug 19

Morris & Watson, the contemporary folk playing duo, hosted the last open mic of the year this Sunday 17 December, bringing together a host of performers from all genres of music and a full lineup of talented musicians ready to perform.

A warm welcome and an evening of entertainment awaited at the club in the picturesque village of Cawthorne, the venue for "events you won't forget, drinks you can't remember," being their Facebook bio. The bar was in full swing though it was the music, not 'happy hour,' which was the focus of the evening.

The takeaway from the evening was how successful the event has become. Based upon the increasing popularity and success of previous evenings, there was a very good crowd, not wanting to miss this wonderful community gathering of talent and the opportunity to absorb its atmosphere, in attendance.

It also marked the beginning of a "New Year, New Era" for the newly formed "Common Culture" band, a new and exciting alternative folk band, with a debut single on the way.

Our 'On The Bass music' bassist Sacha had the delight of performing with ex Brides vocalist and guitarist Emily. They performed two songs from Emily's repertoire of originals of 'Sad Songs for Sad Women' and a cover of 'Northern Downpour' a song by American rock band Panic! at the Disco from their second studio album, Pretty Odd (2008).

All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and a successful close to the 'Open Mic' year. Even after the event had drawn to a close, the venue hummed as stragglers chatted about the evening.

Thanks goes to the organisers, to the venue and, not forgetting, the musicians for making it a wonderful evening - it is something to look forward to again in the New Year.

Also, to everyone who came along to watch. To finish playing and to receive such a warm appreciative applause is really something very special and the support means more than words can ever express.
