Best of Both Worlds - Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass.

Updated: Aug 19

It's the bass played by Lindsey (Lyn-Z) Way and Michael Andrew "Duff" McKagan and which inspired our own On The Bass Music Bassist to play.

The Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass boasts both a split single-coil Precision Bass 'P-bass' pickup at the mid position and also a single-coil Jazz Bass 'J-bass' pickup at the bridge position.

This P-J pickup configuration offers both of the most popular bass pickups in one instrument and is extremely versatile, letting you decide how much of one type of sound or the other type of sound you want. For instance, it can become a Precision bass by rolling off the J-bass bridge pickup volume and, vice versa, a Jazz bass by rolling off the 'P-bass' mid position pickup volume.

The P-J pickup configuration offers a distinctive look and iconic design which sets it apart, but not too far apart soundwise, from its cousins the P-bass and J-bass.

The Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass does however, as its name suggests, in all other respects retain the benefits of a jazz bass with its comfortable contoured Jazz Bass body and 'C' shaped Jazz Bass tapered neck for easier fingering, especially for smaller hands.

The Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass had a circa 20 year production run ending in 2022.

Pictured here is the earlier original 'first run' model with a quarter-inch jack mounted directly into the front face of the body (a personal preference) instead of the Stratocaster style jack on the newer instruments.

It's a stunner to look at with its distinctive gloss black body, cream binding around its front perimeter, and matching black headstock face. Less is more, the absence of a pickguard adding to its sleek image.

Aptly adding to its smoldering minimalist look, it features smoked chrome hardware and dot inlays on the side of the neck instead of on the rosewood fretboard to finish.
