Finding balance!

Updated: Aug 19

The location of the anchor point for attaching the front of the strap to the bass guitar can assist with balance when playing while standing.

The aim is to allow the instrument to hang comfortably from the shoulders in a proper playing position.

There are two options:

The first and most popular is to connect the front of the strap to a strap button on the horn. This works well in most cases.

The second more traditional option is to attach the front of the strap to a strap button, a "hootenanny button," on the back of the headstock.

A hootenanny button was originally a factory option introduced circa 1960 for the Fender Precision Bass. To test, the same effect can be achieved by use of a tied string (or headstock strap) under the strings behind the nut.

A strap connected via a hootenanny button may provide extra comfort in the event of back problems.

The use of the hootenanny button may also cure neck dive issues for either:

(i) a top heavy bass without having to add extra weight to the rear of the instrument; or

(ii)  a standard scale bass with a short top horn that does not extend to the 12th fret.
