Thinking about getting an acoustic bass guitar?

Updated: Aug 19

It is a product of evolution of the standing double bass with all the advantages which stem from that. What are those? In a nutshell, it comes down to sound, functionality, and convenience.

What is an acoustic bass guitar?

It may have evolved from the standing double bass but can be worn off the shoulder, is more space-efficient, has the benefit of a precision fretboard and can be played with a pick. Extremely versatile in terms of transportability and ease of use, it adds a resonant organic tonal quality to the beat.

What are the advantages of an acoustic bass guitar?

The main advantage is that it isn't dependent upon an amplifier to use it, which is ideal for travel, acoustic jams, and practice in low-volume spaces such as apartments.

That isn't to forget its natural resonance and woody tones which complement other acoustic instruments with the energy of the groove without the being overbearing.

Is an acoustic bass guitar loud enough?

They are designed to project and resonate but the long scale lengths and heavy gauge strings make it harder to hear those low frequencies in a mix. They work perfectly for quieter and all-acoustic sets and a mic will give extra presence if required.

If volume is a must, most acoustic basses are equipped with a built-in electronic preamp and pickup system which maintain the natural acoustic tonality when playing in a bigger setting or recording in the studio. The integrated tone and volume controls make it adaptable to better fit the performance space.

Sizes of acoustic bass guitar?

Designed to be played acoustically, their body needs to have enough resonance to be heard which can make them quite cumbersome to hold. However, there are short scaled versions out there which are perfect for smaller musicians, or just for bassists looking to downsize without sacrificing the acoustic tone. Take the Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Bass for example. Taylor have also gone that extra step with special nylon-core strings for easy fretting and good tone.

Is an acoustic bass guitar for you?

An acoustic bass guitar isn’t the right fit for everyone. In most cases, it will be used as an additional bass. If quiet living, travel, space, hassle free, impromptu jams are things which spring to mind then the addition of an acoustic bass guitar to your collection will make a massive impact on your creative space and time.
